Manchester United's team could change again vs Copenhagen

When this season began Erik ten Hag would have had a pretty good idea of his strongest Manchester United team and 10 of them started on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

At that point, it had felt like a pretty productive summer and Ten Hag had the pieces he wanted to form his team. More depth could be added, but the additions should have allowed him to build this side more in his image.

It was clear in pre-season that the Dutchman wanted United to be more proactive in his second season, playing higher up the pitch and pressing with more intent. He had a new striker, the midfielder he wanted and a transformative goalkeeper.

Against Wolves on the first weekend of the season, he could pick all of what looked like his strongest team, aside from Rasmus Hojlund, who was still recovering from a back injury. Three months later the team looks unrecognisable, in terms of personnel and style.

It's worth revisiting that team that played and earned a fortunate win against Wolves, a performance that hinted at what was to come. In Andre Onana, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Antony, Ten Hag fielded 10 players you would expect to be in his best side. Add in Hojlund when he was fit and that looked like United's best team.

But at Fulham on Saturday and another 1-0 win that involved a degree of fortune, only five of those players started. Varane and Mount have been dropped, Martinez, Shaw and Casemiro are long-term injury absentees and Rashford picked up a knock last week. Even players
