LIVE: Red flood warning issued in Greater Manchester as residents told 'take action' - updates

Residents are being urged to take action and protect their homes with flooding expected in a Greater Manchester town. The Environment Agency has issued a red flood warning for Horwich, near Bolton.

The warning means flooding is expected in an area of Horwich town centre. An update on the Environment Agency website this morning (November 6) says: "Flooding is expected in this area.

"This means properties are at risk of flooding. Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions.

"Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water. Consider activating any property flood protection products you may have."

The warning covers Horwich town centre, from Bridge Street and Old Station Park, to the M61. It also includes homes and businesses on Winter Hey Lane, Mason Street and adjoining roads including St. John Street, New Brunswick Street, Emmett Street, Taylor Street and Chorley New Road.

Meanwhile, a separate amber flood alert has been issued in Wigan, for the Upper River Douglas area. The less severe alert means flooding is possible, and residents should 'be alert', according to the Environment Agency.
