Manchester United's position going into final week of transfer window speaks volumes

The best-run football clubs typically don't do much business in the final week of the transfer window. Manchester United could yet sign another two players.

It is true that progress has been made in United's speed to sign their top targets this summer, though just two matches into the new campaign, Mason Mount has struggled and their gamble up front is still injured.

A strong string of results in the coming weeks could drastically change the mood around the club, just as it did a year ago, but there is valid reason for concern over the question marks that still remain.

United still have a hoard of dispensable players stuck at the club, and in a window where Erik ten Hag wanted to strengthen his squad depth, they still look rather light in some areas.

It also can't be ignored that United have already backed Ten Hag with an enormous £406m since he arrived at the club, and it is ill-advised to keep throwing more money at trying to find a solution when some of those new arrivals simply haven't delivered.

There might have to be an exception if they are to have a squad good enough to secure a top-four place again this season, though.

United might still add a goalkeeper and another midfielder with a week left in the transfer window, but club sources have reiterated that their activity is limited by the Premier League's profitability and sustainability regulations.

In order to buy, they must first sell. That is far easier said than done when it comes to some of their highest earners and the club's reluctance to take a huge hit on their own valuation of players as financial assets.
