Manchester United's January transfer decision on Amad has been justified
It proved to be a quiet window on the Manchester United recruitment front in January with no arrivals. However, it was a different story in terms of outgoings.
Eager to trim down a bloated squad, there were a number of notable departees including Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Amad.
Each left on loan until the end of the season, some with a view to eventually making a move permanent, whilst others with the intention of just getting regular first-team minutes.
Amad falls into the bracket of the latter given how sparse game time has been for the teenager this season, despite United’s well-publicised struggles.
He started United’s Champions League clash vs Young Boys in December, but that proved to be his only senior first-team appearance of the season.
Although Amad is very much considered as a prospect for the future, there was an expectancy that he might play a bigger role in United’s plans this season. He was after all signed for a fairly substantial £37million and did make eight senior appearances across all competitions in the second half of last season.
Yet despite there being hope amongst Reds fans that his role within the squad was set to grow, clearly both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now Ralf Rangnick have opined that the 19-year-old isn’t quite at the level required to excel at United.
And the decision to let him leave last month looked justified on Wednesday night as Amad lined up for Rangers against Celtic in the Glasgow derby.
It proved to be a disastrous fixture for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men who found themselves down 3-0 inside the opening 45 minutes, a score that they failed to overturn in the second half.
