Key Fulham figure opens up on Fabio Carvalho’s feelings following failed Liverpool transfer

Fulham head coach Marco Silva has insisted young starlet Fabio Carvalho is ‘very happy’ at Craven Cottage despite a dream move to Liverpool collapsing on the final day of the January transfer window.

The 19-year-old’s future in West London has been up in the air for a number of months after he turned down contract offers from the club which could have easily led to a bidding war this month.

Despite a lot of interest in the England youth international’s signature, it was only the Reds who made a late concrete move and an £8 million fee was agreed between the two clubs.

Matters were complicated though due to the fact that the transfer included a loan back to Fulham for Carvalho for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign, and unlike the Premier League, the EFL cannot grant extensions with a ‘deal sheet’ with the Lisbon-born midfielder’s temporary return needing treating as a proper transfer.

In the end it was left too late in the day to complete, meaning Carvalho remains at Fulham as a permanent player for at least the rest of the season, and despite a presumed unhappiness about the move collapsing, Silva has stated that Carvalho is acting quite the opposite.

“On the final day, the timing and the really important details are always complicated for everyone, not just for us, but for Fabio and for the club with interest in him,” Silva said, per The Athletic.

“This is the main thing to say. That’s what happened in that moment.

“What I can say is that Fabio is really happy.

“The day after the situation, I saw him with the same smile on his face like always.

“He enjoyed the session and worked hard. That’s the main thing.”

The Verdict

You’d understand if deep down Carvalho would be unhappy at how the situation unfolded.
