Manchester United's forgotten £55m man is set to be available again - but there's a catch

Manchester United fans were given an injury update yesterday on a player it would have been easy to forget still played for the club.

United midfielder Mason Mount sustained a calf injury on November 11 and he's been unavailable since, despite returning to light training on grass at the end of December.

"I think he is in a good spell now and he will return shortly, I think after the international break," said Erik ten Hag about Mount at his press conference on Friday afternoon. "For next week, some players are planning to return, hopefully when the process will continue like it is now."

Mount has made just 12 appearances since signing from Chelsea in the summer for an initial fee of £55million and having him back from injury will be like welcoming a new signing.

The midfielder was brought to Manchester to play in a deeper role but didn't look suited to that position earlier in the season, so it will be fascinating to see how he's used.

The next international break comes between March 18 and March 26, and Mount could make his return to the matchday squad for the clash with Brentford in west London.

Many have questioned why Mount was signed, especially after the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, and the player will have a point to prove when he's available for selection again.

United haven't missed Mount during his spell on the sidelines. There hasn't been a clamour for him to return like there was with Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, and it remains to be seen whether he can become a successful signing at Old Trafford.
