Manchester United receive major Mason Mount injury boost

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has returned to light training on grass after a calf injury. Mount has not played since picking up an injury against Luton Town on November 11, but he took the next step in his recovery by completing light individual training at Carrington on Wednesday morning.

The 24-year-old is continuing his rehabilitation and he was pictured as the rest of his teammates completed a recovery session nearby after United's win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Mount taking part in light training on grass suggests his return from the sidelines is just a few weeks away and he'll join the main group next before he's available for selection again.

January was earmarked for Mount's return and he'll be hopeful of winning a regular starting role in the New Year after a mixed start to his time at Old Trafford after signing from Chelsea.

Mount has made just four league starts in the Premier League after picking up hamstring and calf injuries, but Erik ten Hag is confident he can make a difference when he's available.

“I think in every game, our game would benefit from Mason Mount,” said Ten Hag in October. “I don't have any concern to line him up. He did come on in a lot of games, he started in a lot of games.

“In the last game [against FC Copenhagen] he didn't [play], but definitely he is one we consider for Sunday because as you say, he has abilities to be very helpful against City.”

Mount has contributed no goals and one assist in his 12 appearances for United.
