Manchester United player set to stay amid transfer interest

Manchester United defender Will Fish has suffered torn ligaments and is set to be sidelined for up to five weeks.

Fish came on at half-time in the 3-0 friendly defeat to Liverpool in South Carolina on Saturday but was carried off injured after committing a foul.

United manager Erik ten Hag walked onto the pitch to check on Fish’s well-being and it is understood he had a scan on his return to United’s Carrington training complex on Monday. Sources say Fish did not suffer a fracture and the prognosis is better than Fish had expected.

The setback all but rules out a transfer for Fish, who has generated interest from Championship clubs. The 21-year-old's contract expires next year but United have the option of an additional year.

Before the injury, Fish was told he would not be sold unless there was another incoming at centre half due to new signing Leny Yoro’s fractured metatarsal that could rule him out until November. United sold centre back Willy Kambwala last month and released Raphael Varane.

United's five most senior centre backs suffered either an injury or illness during their tour of the United States. Harry Maguire was left out of the Liverpool game as a precaution, Victor Lindelof was taken off at half-time as a precaution and Jonny Evans came off at the same time as he was unwell.

United have had bids of £43million and £50m rejected by Everton for defender Jarrad Branthwaite and they remain interested in Bayern Munich centre back Matthijs de Ligt.
