Manchester United hero Eric Cantona pays tribute to Lady Cathy Ferguson

Manchester United hero Eric Cantona has paid a moving tribute to Lady Cathy Ferguson after her death.

Lady Cathy, the wife of legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, passed away aged 84. The Ferguson family confirmed that sad news in a statement released on Friday afternoon.

Sir Alex met Lady Cathy when he was 23 and the two were married for 57 years. They went on to have three sons together, Mark in 1968 before twins Jason and Darren came along in 1972.

Cantona, regarded as one of the greatest players in United history, was signed by Sir Alex from bitter rivals Leeds United in 1992 and went on to win four Premier League titles with the club. The ever-popular Frenchman has now reached out to the Ferguson family to share his condolences.

The 57-year-old uploaded a picture of Lady Cathy with Sir Alex on to his Instagram account on Saturday morning. Cantona added the caption: "Rest in peace dear Lady Cathy. My strongest friendship goes to her family."

A statement from the Ferguson family on Friday afternoon read: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time."

Cantona made 185 appearances for United during his spell at Old Trafford as a player under Sir Alex - contributing with 82 goals and 62 assists. In addition to his Premier League medals, the forward also helped the club pick up an FA Cup trophy in 1994 and 1996 - when he scored the winner against Liverpool at Wembley.
