Manchester United invite fans to pay respects to Sir Bobby Charlton

Manchester United have invited supporters to pay their respects to club legend Sir Bobby Charlton after he passed away over the weekend.

Charlton, who died at the age of 86, made 758 appearances for United and won the European Cup at Wembley in 1968, scoring twice in the 4-1 win against Benfica in the final.

That famous victory came a decade after the Munich air disaster, in which Charlton survived but many of his friends and teammates didn’t.

He suffered cuts to his head and shock in the crash in Munich, which killed 23 people. Goalkeeper Harry Gregg dragged Charlton away from the wreckage, but he spent a week in the hospital before being discharged. Charlton played for United less than a month after the crash.

Charlton remained a prominent figure even after his retirement and took up a role as club director in 1984, a position he held for nearly 40 years.

A physical book of condolence will be available to sign in the International Suite at Old Trafford between 10am and 10pm on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The book will also be available for signing when United play FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, with further details to follow.

United also invites fans to place a tribute on the Trinity statue on the forecourt at Old Trafford, with free tea and coffee provided outside the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.

Any fan wishing to pay their respects in person can park for free in car park E1 at Old Trafford.

There is also an online book of condolence open to any supporter who wishes to pay their respect. You can post your messages online here.
