Manchester United confirm Sir Bobby Charlton tribute plans vs Copenhagen and Man City

Manchester United will host a special pre-match tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton ahead of kick-off in Tuesday’s Champions League match with FC Copenhagen.

Old Trafford turnstiles will be open from 6pm with the club encouraging fans to take their seats early to pay their respects to the football great, who died aged 86 on Saturday. A wreath will be placed on Sir Bobby’s seat in the director’s box with players and staff to wear black armbands for the game.

The matchday programme will be dedicated to the club icon with pre-game commemorations concluding with a minute’s silence before kick-off. Earlier in the day on Tuesday, respects will made to Sir Bobby in the club’s UEFA Youth League tie against Copenhagen, a poignant act given his long association with the academy.

More tributes are set to be scheduled for Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, where a minute’s applause will be held while flags and surfer banners are unfurled. United Women held a minute’s silence and wore black armbands in their 5-0 Women’s Super League win over Everton on Sunday.

Fans of United and beyond have been signing a book of condolences at Old Trafford en mass with Erik ten Hag, United squad players and staff members all paying their respects to the 1968 European Cup winner and 1966 World Cup hero.

Those who wish to sign their messages in person can do so up until 10pm tonight (Monday, October 23) and from 10am to 4pm in the International Suite on Tuesday. Doors will remain open from 10am until 10pm again on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
