Harry Maguire pays tribute to Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton after Sheffield United win

Centre-back Harry Maguire admitted the announcement of Sir Bobby Charlton's death hit the Manchester United squad hard ahead of Saturday night's 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

It was announced four hours before kick-off that the former midfielder had died at the age of 86. His family confirmed that he had passed away surrounded by loved ones in the early hours of Saturday morning.

On an emotion-filled evening in South Yorkshire, however, United found the courage and strength to record a second successive win. Diogo Dalot struck a sumptuous winner after Oli McBurnie had earlier cancelled out Scott McTominay's opener.

Though their performance was far from vintage, United did enough to secure all three points, lifting them up to eighth in the Premier League table. And for Maguire, who was handed a second successive start, it was important to secure a win in Charlton's memory.

"First and foremost, it is a really sad day," Maguire told Sky Sports. "We obviously found out this afternoon and preparing for a game it hit us hard.

"Sir Bobby came into the changing room a lot after games and lit the place up; you could see the aura that he brought to the dressing room. You could see the amount of respect that the lads, the staff and the club had for him.

"He is an absolute legend of this club and a legend of football. Our thoughts go out to his family.

"We are obviously delighted to win the game tonight, but this is more than football. Our thoughts are with his family."
