Manchester United have three players who deserve squad number upgrades next season

Come the end of this season, one photograph is likely to stand out in the minds of Manchester United supporters more than any other.

That is the one of Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho perched on the Old Trafford advertising hoardings after the latter's first goal against West Ham United earlier this month. It has the potential to become an iconic shot, drawing comparisons with Lunch Atop A Skyscraper, the famous image of 11 men sitting on a steel beam 800 feet above the ground in Manhattan during the construction of the Rockefeller Plaza in 1932.

That photograph adorned Sir Alex Ferguson's office wall when he was United boss. If Sir Jim Ratcliffe's grand plan takes flight, the shot of Mainoo, Hojlund and Garnacho might just adorn his.

The trio have been central to United's recent resurrection, each playing key roles in their run of five consecutive victories. Mainoo has oozed class in midfield, Garnacho has gone up through the gears and Hojlund has been banging in the goals.

At the ages of 18, 19 and 21 respectively, they are the future of United. Two have blossomed since swapping youth-team football for the first-team and other has, with a bit of time, started to justify why the club was prepared to invest up to £72million in his signature.

It has been suggested United, under Ratcliffe's ruling, should assemble a team around the trio. If that is what the British billionaire decides, it is unlikely to generate groans from the supporters.
