I helped Jose Mourinho beat Manchester United - now I'm coaching Erik ten Hag's players

Benni McCarthy scored both goals for Porto in their first-leg win against Manchester United in February 2004 - and he's now helping Erik ten Hag's players do the same thing for the Reds.

He was the hero of that tie, and today he's helping players like Rasmus Hojlund reach their full potential. McCarthy never played for United, with his only experience in English football coming at Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.

In 2022, he was brought on board by Ten Hag as part of United's coaching team. McCarthy was Porto's top scorer in the 2003-04 season, netting 20 league goals, including the first and last of the campaign and while his European goals took a bit longer to come, but when they did, they were significant.

Despite this, McCarthy had no problem outplaying the likes of Gary Neville and Wes Brown at the Dragao. McCarthy's first goal was a quick reaction, shooting a low volley past Tim Howard to equalise after Quinton Fortune had scored for the visitors.
