Manchester United have four weeks to implement the change Ineos have banked on for the future

The first day of pre-season always brings with it a buzz and the feeling around Carrington would have been no different on Monday morning. There might not have been a new manager, but there were three new coaches and some senior footballing appointments, giving this season a feeling of renewal for Manchester United.

It feels like something of a fresh start for Ineos, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's £1.25bn investment and his takeover of football operations at the club only truly getting going when the shutters came down on last season. By deciding to stick with Erik ten Hag they didn't wipe the slate clean, but optimism abounds still.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake have arrived to beef up the coaching set-up, while Dan Ashworth taking up post as sporting director was a significant moment for Ineos. Christopher Vivell is another significant appointment and chief executive Omar Berrada starts on Saturday.

That has given Ineos the structure they want and allowed those people to focus on their roles. Until last week technical director Jason Wilcox was the only senior addition, but the arrival of Ashworth and Vivell has allowed the former Premier League winner to narrow his focus.

One of Wilcox's primary responsibilities is to draw up what United are terming a 'game model'. The 53-year-old is to implement a tactical style and football methodology from the first team down to the academy, but that requires buy-in from Ten Hag. Wilcox will also lead first-team recruitment, so will be charged with signing players that fit that approach.
