Ruud van Nistelrooy has told Manchester United why they need to sign Euro 2024 star

With just over three weeks to go until the start of the new Premier League season, the number of players who are being linked with moves to Manchester United is increasing.

United made their second signing of the summer last week, drafting in highly-rated centre-back Leny Yoro from Lille. The Reds saw off competition from Real Madrid to sign the Frenchman and he impressed on his debut against Rangers on Saturday.

Joshua Zirkzee is the club's only other new arrival so far in this window, but United are working tirelessly behind the scenes to add more quality to Erik ten Hag's squad. It is understood the addition of a new midfielder is now their next objective.

United want to draft in a new defensive-minded midfielder to operate at the base of the engine room and have been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte. They have also expressed interest in Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi.

Despite the addition of a holding midfielder being United's main aim in relation to their quest to strengthen their midfield options, they have been credited with interest in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Xavi Simons. The Netherlands international is an attack-minded midfielder, recognised for playing as a No.10. He can also operate out wide, either on the right or the left.

According to Transfermarkt, Simons, who spent last season on loan at German club RB Leipzig, made 41 of his 43 appearances last term as a wide player, starting just two games centrally. United are currently knee-deep in wingers, meaning it is hard to envision them wanting to sign him to operate out wide.
