Manchester United have been told how Luke Shaw will handle Tyrell Malacia competition

Manchester United have been given a hint over how Luke Shaw will handle the added competition from Tyrell Malacia.

Malacia became United's first summer signing on Tuesday, joining from Feyenoord. Malacia, 22, underlined his promise in the Eredivisie and has been capped five times by the Netherlands. His arrival will put Shaw under pressure for a starting position next season, but that dynamic could benefit United in the long-term if his relationship with Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell, at international level, is anything to go by.

Shaw and Chilwell have competed for an England shirt over the last 18 months or so and that should continue with one eye on the upcoming World Cup in Qatar this winter. Shaw, 26, made his Three Lions debut in 2014 and his form at United the season before last earned him an international recall.

Chilwell was pressed on his relationship with Shaw in November after they formed part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 showpiece. He said: "When you've got someone in the same position as you, it doesn't have to be; 'Ah, you're enemies'.

"You're fighting for the same shirt - but you can be friends. It's the same as me and Luke with England. We are very good friends when we're here. I'd even go as far as to say he's one of my good friends in the team."

Shaw, who scored against Italy in the Wembley final, was first choice for United and England when fit last season. However, the former Southampton graduate missed the June internationals before returning to pre-season training under Ten Hag at Carrington. He is now set for the summer tour to Thailand, Australia and Norway.
