Manchester United handed Jonny Evans injury update

Jonny Evans is expected to be fit for Manchester United's trip to face Sheffield United this weekend, despite suffering an injury scare while away on international duty.

The Northern Ireland captain was seen limping heavily in the closing stages of their 1-0 defeat to Slovenia on Tuesday night, having already received treatment in the first half of the match.

Evans appeared to be in some pain after taking a blow to his foot in the final minutes of the match, which could have added to United's already worrying injury situation.

However, speaking after the match, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill issued an update on the United defender and eased concerns about any serious damage.

"He's obviously hobbling a bit; I think the same foot got stamped on three times," he told reporters after the defeat. "So he's had it pretty badly. I think he's fine; he'll be okay. It is one of those where he'll wake up in the morning, and I imagine it'll be pretty sore, but there's no sort of real damage or anything as far as I am aware."

United will hope Evans is fit enough to travel when they face Sheffield United on Saturday night, with Erik ten Hag's side already short of defensive reinforcement.

Fellow central defender Lisandro Martinez is sidelined with a foot injury, and Raphael Varane missed the Brentford match due to a minor issue.

United might need to play a centre-back at full-back again this weekend, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Sergio Reguilon all recovering from their respective injuries.
