Manchester United handed international duty injury blow ahead of Leicester City clash

Manchester United have been dealt an injury blow ahead of the return of the Premier League against Leicester City with striker Edinson Cavani picking up a problem while on international duty.

The striker was making his first start for club or country since February when he lined up for the World Cup qualifier against Chile on Tuesday night. The 35-year-old has come off the bench for the last two Man United games after recovering from a groin strain.

He however lasted under 30 minutes before being substituted off with an injury. The extent of the injury is unknown with the club confirming that his availability against City is now ‘in doubt.

The Manchester Evening News also report that the striker is ‘unlikely’ to be available for City’s visit to Old Trafford. Injury has restricted Cavani to just 17 appearances in all competitions this season.

The news comes as City were also dealt an injury blow on Tuesday night with defender Luke Thomas being left out of the England U21 squad. The full-back is said to have returned to Leicester to undergo assessment on an injury.

Brendan Rodgers will though be hoping to continue to welcome back players at Old Trafford. Both Jonny Evans and Timothy Castagne made their comebacks from injury against Brentford before the international break, while Wesley Fofana could be available after making his comeback vs Rennes a few days earlier.

Ahead of the game, City sit in 10th position in the table, 16 points behind their opponents in sixth place. City do though have two games in hand over Ralf Ragnick’s side.
