Onana backed for United exit amid United links

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Sebastien Frey is worried his old club will sell Andre Onana this summer amid Manchester United's reported interest.

MEN Sport understands Erik ten Hag is looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper in the transfer window. United have announced they are in talks with David de Gea over a new deal, but if he did re-sign he would not be guaranteed to be first choice.

While exactly who the Reds will target to replace De Gea is unknown, Onana has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford club thanks to his relationship with Ten Hag from their days at Ajax. Recently, the Cameroonian caught the eye in Inter's narrow defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League final and Frey believes if he was to stay in Milan he could help them push on.

Ferdinand makes transfer fee claim

Rio Ferdinand believes he would be worth £170million if Manchester United were trying to sign him from Leeds in today's transfer market.

Fees paid for players have risen substantially since Ferdinand's playing days. In July 2002, the centre-back signed from United's fierce rivals for approximately £30m.

This transfer made him the most expensive British footballer and the world's most expensive defender. However, money spent on defenders and players has skyrocketed since.

In 2019, the Reds spent £80m to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City. But even this figure could be dwarfed by some of the fees being touted for RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol, who is expected to leave the Bundesliga club for more than £100m this summer.
