Manchester United great Dwight Yorke doubling down on his Andre Onana comments is a risk

Andre Onana hadn't even made his competitive Manchester United debut and his transfer to Old Trafford was being questioned. Onana kept eight clean sheets as Inter Milan reached the Champions League final against Manchester City last season and yet some pundits, like former player Dwight Yorke, suggested it was the wrong decision to sign him for €52million.

Yorke, speaking in July, said it was a mistake to allow David de Gea to run down his contract. He also suggested Onana was a downgrade and that seemed a tad unfair considering the 27-year-old hadn't made his debut.

Onana's start to life in Manchester has been mixed. His passing has improved the team's build-up approach, but there have been goals he could have stopped and his howler against Bayern Munich earlier in the week was poor.

There is clearly potential for Onana to become regarded as an excellent goalkeeper for United, but that hasn't stopped Yorke from double downing on his initial comments which suggested De Gea should have been kept.

"I've said before that Man United need to be careful what they wish for with losing David de Gea. For all the good De Gea has done for Man United, the way his career ended was really bad," Yorke told OLBG this week.

"I hope this doesn't come back to haunt Man United. Be careful what you wish for. De Gea was the Golden Glove winner, a high-profile player who made mistakes, like the rest of us. De Gea winning the Golden Glove is like winning the Golden Boot and being the top scorer at the club but still getting replaced by the football club. That did not resonate well with me.
