'It’s a long way to come back' - Roy Keane identifies Andre Onana problem at Manchester United

Roy Keane says Andre Onana must 'recover very quickly' from his early mistakes after joining Manchester United over the summer.

Erik ten Hag made a bold statement in the summer to replace David de Gea, the club’s longest-serving player, with £47million man Onana. The former goalkeeper had agreed a contract extension until Old Trafford chiefs made a drastic U-turn, ultimately ending his 12-year association at United.

Despite winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove award last year, De Gea was replaced, with his distribution skills cited as the main reason for concern. Ten Hag convinced the board to stump up a hefty fee to sign a goalie he managed at his previous club Ajax.

However, Onana has struggled to make an impression in his opening 11 games. The Cameroon international has conceded a staggering 19 goals so far during his Old Trafford career including several high-profile mistakes against Brentford and Galatasaray in the last week alone.

Man United legend Keane has insisted it is “a long way back” for Onana after a poor start. Speaking to The Overlap, the former captain, a vocal critic of De Gea, agreed with the decision to sign a keeper but admitted he has not been impressed by his replacement.

“They should have kept him (De Gea),” Keane joked. “Can they not get him back? He's free, isn’t he? No, he had to go, didn't he? He was making too many mistakes.

“Obviously he’s (Onana) had a really poor start. We talk about positions at any big club (and) the goalkeeper at Manchester United has to have a huge personality to deal with mistakes.
