Manchester United given positive update by UEFA amid 100,000-seater Old Trafford plan

Manchester United had the highest aggregate attendance in domestic league football of all European clubs during the 2023/24 season.

Although United finished eighth in the Premier League and recorded a minus goal difference, they were steadfastly backed by supporters and Old Trafford was full each week.

UEFA are set to publish a report that includes attendance figures on Thursday and it has found that United recorded a league home attendance of 1,397,148, which is the highest of all the European teams at home.

Borussia Dortmund had the highest average attendance in home league matches, with 81,305 per Bundesliga match, but they play two fewer league matches than English sides.

In all competitions, Dortmund had the highest total attendance of 1,951,745 - they reached the Champions League final - while AC Milan ranked second (1,860,964) and United came third (1,834,291).

United crashed out of the Champions League before the knockout rounds and finished bottom of their group last season, which meant they didn't drop into the Europa League.

The timing of UEFA's report comes as United are looking to submit plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium by the end of the year. Old Trafford is consistently sold out on matchdays and moving to a bigger capacity stadium will provide more fans with the opportunity to attend.

The findings of the report prove there is an appetite for increased capacity and building a 100,000-seater would see United play their football at the second biggest club ground in Europe.

Real Madrid have recently refurbished the Bernabeu, which is an 85,000-capacity
