Manchester United fans will have to wait for what they really want from Sir Jim Ratcliffe

On the surface, Sir Jim Ratcliffe's opening 48 hours inside Manchester United have been rather uneventful.

After waiting so long for fresh ideas to enter Old Trafford, it could be argued INEOS' arrival has been anti-climactic. Of course, Ratcliffe's initial influence has been subdued because he is still seeking Premier League ratification of his bid to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the Reds but even so, the Christmas Eve announcement has prevented much scrutiny or news coming out of the red half of Manchester.

To his credit, one of Ratcliffe's first decision should be a popular one. An open letter to the Manchester United Supporters' Trust was something which didn't need to be done, however, the decision to do so speaks volumes. Those hoping for further communication at this stage may be disappointed though.

In an all-staff email, the Glazers announced further updates will be few and far between for a little while. "The transaction is subject to the usual regulatory and Premier League approvals, and we hope it will be completed as soon as possible," they explained.

"During this period Sir Jim and INEOS do not plan to make any public statements." Of course this is a minor setback but it should not be too big a concern for supporters.

In his first words following the news the deal had finally been agreed, Ratcliffe tried his best to distance himself from the regime which has overseen failure for the past decade.

Perhaps it is a sign of how bad lines between the terrace and boardroom have got that a letter which respects the fact that the owner is little more than a custodian of the club, can be met so
