Rory McIlroy tells Sir Jim Ratcliffe what won't change at Manchester United despite investment

Golfer and Manchester United supporter Rory McIlroy does not believe the 'toxic culture' at Old Trafford will change until the Glazers have left the club.

The American family last month agreed to sell a 25 per cent stake to British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe who, once the deal has been ratified by the Premier League, will gain control of all football operations at the club. Ratcliffe, who is the chair of chemical giant INEOS, will be supported by Sir David Brailsford and other members of the INEOS group.

The Glazers confirmed in November 2022 that they were exploring 'strategic alternatives for the club'. In response the vast majority of United supporters demanded a full sale.

Despite the best efforts of Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani to secure full control of the club, the Glazers rejected his advances. Instead, they accepted INEOS' bid to secure a minority stake.

Though the investment is generally considered as a step in the right direction a lot of United fans do not believe the club will be able to make the progress it needs to until the Glazers have been fully removed from office. And that is an opinion shared by McIlroy who has previously admitted he would have liked to have invested in the club. The Irishman insists the Glazers need to go to ensure big changes are made.

"I think it's sad what's happened at Manchester United with the owners as it's got to the point where you've got the Glazers who can't even go to their own club and watch games, because the fans are just so disillusioned with what's going on," said McIlroy, speaking on
