Glazers repeating Sir Jim Ratcliffe Manchester United move 3,000 miles away speaks volumes

Just hours after Sir Jim Ratcliffe had sat down with Manchester United supporters to discuss his vision for the future, the Glazers were slapping hands with line-backers of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers more than 3,000 miles away.

The NFL franchise stormed through to what is essentially the quarter-finals of the NFL play-offs after a big 32-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Avram Glazer was joined by Joel Glazer in the locker room to congratulate their players at full-time. The Glazer family own both Tampa Bay and United.

Such visuals have been scarce at Old Trafford. Indeed Ratcliffe has been making moves on the ground this week ahead of his minority stake investment and you would be forgiven for thinking he is the main shareholder of the club.

Ratcliffe introduced himself to journalists ahead of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham and Old Trafford, the first time he has watched United live since his £1.3 billion investment was green-lighted by the Glazers on Christmas Eve. The Americans are not the only Premier League club owners to also have a US sports organisation within their portfolio. Fenway Sports Group of Liverpool own baseball giants Boston Red Sox while Chelsea chief Todd Boehly has a 20% stake in the LA Dodgers.

But at least both have visited their English team’s stadium in recent times. In other contexts, it is perhaps forgivable that these billionaires would be at such an important game for their US franchise.
