Manchester United fans recognise Sir Alex Ferguson point after David de Gea's departure

An era at Manchester United came to an end with David de Gea's departure from Old Trafford.

The Spanish stopper racked up almost 550 appearances during 12 years with the Reds which places him seventh in the club's all-time most games. In that spell, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup twice and the Europa League.

De Gea was brought to United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid to become the long-term successor to the retired Edwin van der Sar. United parted with almost £19m to bring the young stopper from Spain to England.

And with De Gea leaving, United it means the final squad member who played under legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson has now left United this summer. Phil Jones also fell into that bracket, but was confirmed earlier this year that he would be departing Old Trafford this summer when his contract expires.

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton did come through the youth team ranks at United and was named on the bench by Sir Alex on a few occasions during his first spell at the club. However, he did not play for the first team under the Scot before leaving permanently for Cardiff City in 2010 after a string of loan moves, before eventually returning to United in 2021 after spending many years with Burnley and Aston Villa.

And De Gea being the final player to have picked up minutes under Sir Alex is a fact which is not lost on the club's supporters. With that in mind, many feel that is the end of an era at the club.
