Signing the right players is something United have struggled with in the decade following legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson's departure, with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba all arriving with serious footballing pedigree, only for the moves to end up in disappointment. But even Sir Alex knows that feeling well.

The fearsome Scot opened up on one particular struggle in his autobiography nine years ago, where he aired his disappointment in how United's move for Owen Hargreaves worked out. The midfielder had an injury-plagued career at United following his move from Bayern Munich in 2007.

United had high hopes for the then-England international and Sir Alex admits he had hoped the signing would fill the void left by Roy Keane.
