Manchester United fans deliver unanimous verdict on changing captain

The future of Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain has been under the microscope in recent weeks following a troubled run of form for the England defender.

Signed from Leicester City for £80million in August 2019, the centre-back has found himself attracting a wave of criticism at Old Trafford in recent weeks and months, amid some inconsistent performances.

Despite playing a pivotal role in helping England reach the final of the European Championship last summer, Maguire has failed to meet similar standards at United this season, sparking calls from the supporters for him to be dropped from the team as a regular starter.

With his performances having continued to stutter, despite a goal at Leeds on Sunday, a growing number of supporters have since called for him to be stripped of the captain's armband and for the responsibility be handed to someone else within the squad.

That's despite interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirming he has no plans to take the title away from the former Sheffield United man.

Nevertheless, the Manchester Evening News recently conducted a survey to gather the thoughts of United's supporters on who they believe should be tasked with donning the armband.

Almost 3,500 supporters took part in the online survey and put forward their vote for who they believe should be United's captain.

Of the 3,452 votes cast, 34.4 per cent of the voters believed Cristiano Ronaldo should be made captain. The Portuguese star, who returned to United last summer, has sported the armband once this season, captaining the side in Maguire's absence in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves last month.
