'Absolutely not' - Manchester United fans vent anger at plans to 'bulldoze' Old Trafford

Manchester United fans are not happy at reports suggesting Old Trafford could be knocked down.

The Telegraph claim that United are looking at a major redevelopment as they look to rival Wembley’s 90,000-seater capacity. The club are said to be close to appointing preferred partners for the project, with bidders being asked to submit three different design proposals.

Among those options put forward is a complete rebuild of Old Trafford, which has been home to United since 1910. The plan revolves around building a new, larger stadium on a reconfigured site, which would also feature a smaller second ground to host the women’s team and academy matches.

The other two options under consideration are an expansion of Old Trafford’s existing South Stand, plus an overhaul of the rest of the stadium. A complete revamp of the stadium, including an overhaul of the club’s corporate hospitality but no South Stand expansion, has also been mooted.

It’s the suggestion of Old Trafford being knocked down though that has caught the attentions of United fans. The plan would encounter plenty of issues, including where the Reds would play their homes games while Old Trafford was out of action.

The plan has not been met well by supporters. Despite many realising the need for redevelopment at the ground, a lot are opposed to the idea of knocking down United’s iconic home.

United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche told the club’s fans’ forum recently that they would be appointing their preferred partner “in the coming weeks”. Once the preferred bidder is named, United will reportedly seek a more detailed assessment of the proposals put
