Manchester United dream midfield amid Sander Berge interest and Manuel Ugarte decision

Manchester United may still have a rather different midfield going into next season despite the recent transfer update.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer. The Ligue 1 club have reportedly set an asking price of €60million (£51million) for the Uruguay international, which has seen reports claiming that United have now withdrawn from the race for his signature.

As a result, United are reportedly looking at other targets with The Athletic claiming that Burnley star Sander Berge is one possible option. The report claims that the Reds have identified Berge as an alternative option to Ugarte for the defensive midfield position. Previously, Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, Monaco's Youssouf Fofana and new PSG signing Joao Neves have been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Were United to sign Berge, it would give Erik ten Hag another valuable option to have in the No.6 role for next season. Casemiro would compete with Berge for the defensive midfield role this season, unless the Brazilian was to depart this summer, of course.

With Berge in the No.6 role, it would leave two remaining spots in the midfield to be occupied. Bruno Fernandes is the United captain and, injury or suspension providing, is expected to start the majority of games for the club.
