Manchester United can get FFP boost at a perfect time for Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Manchester United could be reaping the awards in more ways than one for work done in the club’s academy over the past few years.

Head of academy Nick Cox has been praised for his work with the youth teams since being appointed into the role in the summer of 2019. The former Watford and Sheffield United man has been credited with making massive improvements in the academy, and that is now filtering into the first team.

After impressing Erik ten Hag this time last year during pre-season, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo went onto play a key role in the season. His performances earned him a call up to the England team for Euro 2024.

The 19-year-old made a total of 32 first team appearances for United in all competitions last season, scoring five goals. He was hailed for his performance in the FA Cup final against Man City as United came out as 2-1 winners.

History could potentially repeat itself again this year with both Toby Collyer and Harry Amass impressing during pre-season so far. Both players started Sunday’s 3-0 loss against Liverpool, with Amass also being selected for the 3-2 win over Real Betis as well as the friendly vs Arsenal.

Ten Hag has shown with Mainoo that he is not afraid of putting young players in if they impress. That’s a good sign for both Collyer and Amass ahead of the new season, but their development is good news for United, even if they don’t break into the first team.
