Manchester restaurant on edge of Chinatown handed prestigious Michelin award

A Manchester restaurant has become one of 20 eateries in the UK and Ireland to be awarded a coveted Michelin award. Higher Ground, on the outskirts of Chinatown, has been handed a prestigious Bib Gourmand.

It comes just a week before the highly anticipated Michelin ceremony for Great Britain & Ireland. The awards, which will see Michelin stars handed out will take place at Manchester's historic Midland Hotel on 5 January, with many hopefully that the city will be recognised.

Named after Bibendum - the official name of the award's mascot, The Michelin Man - the Bib Gourmand award was created in 1997 and is given to restaurants deemed to offer "great" quality and value cooking. All but one of this year's 20 restaurants to receive a Bib are new additions to the Guide.

Speaking about the Bib Gourmand, Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of The MICHELIN Guide commented: "It is a joy to see 20 restaurants newly awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2024 edition of The MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland.

"These are establishments that deserve recognition for their continued commitment to offering affordable, delicious cooking. The generosity and value for money they offer is wonderful to see during these challenging economic times.”

As the only Greater Manchester restaurant to make the cut, Higher Ground, which opened last February, is described by Michelin as "one of the new jewels in the city's culinary crown'. Commending it's "great" value, Michelin says its founding team provide "friendly service alongside a selection of full-flavoured small plates".

The restaurant on New York Street was founded by three industry veterans who first met in
