Man United’s Frenkie de Jong alternative ‘dreams’ of transfer and has Paul Scholes' backing

Sofyan Amrabat reportedly dreams of a return to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag mulls over additions to the Manchester United engine room.

United are in the market for another defensively-minded midfielder following the successful acquisition of two of his former players, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, from Bayern Munich. And one way or another, it appears there may be at least one more reunion in store.

Frenkie de Jong's name has been mentioned in connection with United once more this summer and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the Dutchman finally moves to Old Trafford. He has been on United's radar for a number of years, with the Red Devils losing out to Barcelona when he first left Amsterdam in 2019.

However, De Jong has expressed contentment in Catalonia and was previously upset when an offer from United was accepted. If a second attempt to sign De Jong fails, Ten Hag may turn his attention to Amrabat, who impressed during his loan spell at Old Trafford last season.

Ten Hag's list of former Ajax players now at United includes De Ligt, Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Andre Onana, each of whom have joined since his arrival in 2022. He also has Dutch talents Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia on the books, forming a strong core of compatriots or Dutch speakers.
