Dimitar Berbatov voices major concern for new Man United signing Matthijs de Ligt

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has raised his concerns over whether Matthjis de Ligt will be able to keep fit amid the demands of the Premier League.

The defender sealed his move to Old Trafford from German club Bayern Munich along with teammate Noussair Mazraoui. De Ligt, who had been a long-term target for Erik ten Hag, signed a deal until 2029

De Ligt made his debut in the 1-0 win over Fulham in the opening game of the season and having played just nine minutes, supporters will want to see more of him as the season goes on. He will be a crucial player for United, as they look to improve their defence this season after conceding a total of 81 goals last term. That figure was the highest total in the club's history since 1976.

However, Berbatov shared his concern over whether the 25-year-old will be able to keep fit given his injury record in the past. Every year between 2019 and 2024, De Ligt has spent time sidelined with some sort of injury.

The Netherlands international's most recent setback was an inner ligament issue in April which he sustained after an inner knee ligament tear. This is something that worries Berbatov.

"In a way, yes. My only concern for him is to stay fit," Berbatov told Futbin.com when asked about whether De Ligt can improve United's defence.
