Man United lose 1-0 to Real Sociedad after harsh penalty call against Lisandro Martinez
Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by Real Sociedad in their Europa League match on Thursday evening due to a controversial penalty decision.
The game went ahead at Old Trafford despite the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the day.
A lovely tribute took place before the match as everyone inside the stadium paid tribute to Her Majesty, The Queen.
A minute’s silence was held and players from both sides wore black armbands in her memory.
It was Real Sociedad who won 1-0 courtesy of a controversial second-half penalty.
A shot on goal by Man City legend David Silva rebounded off Lisandro Martinez’s leg and hit his arm.
The referee pointed to the spot and awarded the away side a penalty. Martinez was even given a yellow card.
United players, including Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, protested the decision heavily.
VAR looked at the incident but decided that the decision to give the penalty was the right call.
Brais Mendez then stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards. It was a very harsh penalty call and you can view it below…
This “handball” resulted a pen and a yellow card for Lisandro Martínez
