Man United know Jarrad Branthwaite transfer truth as new blow exposed

Manchester United's defensive overhaul this summer was expected while the previous season was in its relative infancy.

Injuries decimated the backline and led to United scrounging around for players who could fill the gaps left behind. The now departed Willy Kambwala was given an unlikely call-up while veteran defender Jonny Evans made a whopping 23 appearances in the Premier League - something which was not accounted for when he signed a one-year deal last summer.

Things needed to change this summer and so far we have seen just that. Impressive teenager Leny Yoro has arrived from Lille in what has been described as a coup considering Real Madrid's intense interest.

United have their eyes on Matthijs de Ligt too but are looking to complete some more sales first to fund their bid for the Bayern Munich man. The last piece of the puzzle for the Reds looked to be to bring Jarrad Branthwaite on board too.

Hopes of signing the England international were boosted last week when Everton's takeover fell through and it was suggested the Toffees would now be open to selling Branthwaite at a cut price. However, these suggestions were quickly extinguished when conflicting reports stressed the Merseyside club were no longer open to receiving bids for the 22-year-old.

Any lingering hope that United could benefit from another twist in the tale appeared to be snuffed out on Monday evening as Aston Villa announced the arrival of Everton's Amadou Onana. It is believed the West Midlands club have splashed £50m on the Belgian in a bumper departure for Sean Dyche's team.
