Man United have already suffered Xavi rejection after approach from Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother

Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has been linked with replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager - but the iconic midfielder rejected the club during his playing career.

Xavi, who was integral to Barcelona's golden era under Pep Guardiola and once held the record for most appearances at the club, took the reins at Camp Nou in November 2021. In his first full season in charge, Xavi guided Barcelona to win La Liga, finishing ten points ahead of fierce rivals Real Madrid, but a disappointing title defence saw him part ways with his boyhood club this summer.

It has been claimed that United CEO Omar Berrada has twice travelled for talks with the ex-Barcelona boss as Ten Hag continues to come under pressure at Old Trafford despite his recent contract extension. While Xavi is enjoying a sabbatical from football, it would not be the first time that United have approached the 44-year-old.

Reflecting on a previous discussion with Manchester United, Xavi recalled to The Times in 2021: "Manchester United approached me once through Sir Alex Ferguson's brother, but my answer was very quick," he said. "I was focused on Barca, my priority was only Barca. I am a fan from the very inside of myself and that's why it was impossible for me to leave.

"Now I see it differently. Everyone tells me that the Premier League is wonderful, a great league to work in. First of all, for the passion with how they live the game. How they treat and respect you, the atmosphere and the stadiums."
