Man United board faces awkward Erik ten Hag questions as lack of transfer funds exposed

Teddy Sheringham has called out Manchester United's board for their decision-making regarding Erik ten Hag's scattergun spending spree.

The Dutchman was backed with a contract extension and a healthy summer transfer budget despite a bitterly disappointing Premier League season, with the board showing faith in him thanks to the FA Cup trumph, even though they explored other management options as a contingency.

Backed by new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team, over £180million was splashed out on five signings, including Ten Hag's previous Ajax players Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. But United still kicked off the season with underwhelming performances, which didn't seem to benefit much from the new signings, ultimately leading to the 54-year-old's dismissal.

Now, with Ruben Amorim at the helm aiming to install a new identity, Sheringham fears funds may have dried up after the ill-spending on Ten Hag's vision, leaving the board with some tough questions to contend with ahead.

"It's good in the fact that the United directors backed their man and gave him money to make signings, but it was so evident from the outside that Ten Hag wasn't up to the job," Red Devils legend Sheringham told Best Offshore Sportsbooks.

"It was like, 'What are you doing? Why are you giving this man more money to spend?' He's already wasted a lot of money on players. He's bought a lot of players that are like, 'Oh, that's a few quid. Yeah, I'll go and play for Man United. That'll do'.
