Man City Women boss Gareth Taylor plays down significance of Chelsea win

Manchester City's women's team coach Gareth Taylor isn't getting too excited despite a big win over Chelsea. City levelled with the Women's Super League leaders thanks to Khadija Shaw's game-winning strike.

City not only needed to win, but also had to score at least two goals to leapfrog Friday night's rivals. But City managed to even out Chelsea's amazing 28-goal difference, keeping Emma Hayes' squad in charge just by virtue of scoring more total goals.

Taylor is hopeful but measured after the win which offers his side a better shot at displacing the four-time reigning champions. He immediately set sight on future improvement and upcoming challenges.

He expressed his joy stating: "I'm really pleased, proud of the players. I thought we defended incredibly well, and we've got eight games to go. We're excited about the challenge."

He added, "It's a big step, but that's all it is. It's three points and we move onto the next. It's a big step for us, there's no doubt about it. I think we've kind of gone under the radar a little bit this season."

Expressing pride in his team he said,"I think we've tried to play our game as much as we possibly can, but we've added a bit of steeliness and determination to our defending now, we're trying to improve our set plays. The signs are good. It's just hard work from the players."

Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw scored her 14th goal of the season in the 14th minute at a packed Kingsmeadow, after Chelsea captain Erin Cuthbert lost the ball to Jess Park, who then set up Shaw.

Chelsea thought they should have had a penalty when Mayra Ramirez went down from a challenge by Alex Greenwood. It looked like Greenwood hit Ramirez's ankle and not the ball, but without VAR, the referee didn't give a penalty.
