Man City told who could replace Pep Guardiola as Vincent Kompany overlooked

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Vincent Kompany is too soon into his managerial career to replace Pep Guardiola when the time comes for him to leave.

Kompany is currently the manager of newly promoted Burnley and has been praised heavily for the style of football the Clarets have adopted at Turf Moor. Before City met the Belgian's side in the FA Cup, Guardiola earmarked the Blues' legendary captain as the club's future boss.

He told reporters: "You realise when you see [Burnley] there is work behind it and a good knowledge. What I said about Vinny sooner or later coming here is not because he was an important figure as a football player, although that helps, or his connection with the fans and knowing the club.

"It’s his understanding of the game and he has an incredible work ethic. He puts pressure on every department to be the best. When you combine your knowledge about the game, experience with the club you love, the end will be you finish together."

However, Onuoha feels the City job would be too soon for Kompany once Guardiola does decide to leave. Instead, he has tipped Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and Barcelona's Xavi as potential successors to the Catalan.

He told ESPN FC: "Not Kompany, too early, no. I’m going to say Xavi, or Xabi Alonso and I think Kompany comes after that."

Currently, there is no suggestion Guardiola will be leaving City any time soon. The 52-year-old signed a new contract at the Etihad last season to keep him in Manchester until 2025 by which point many feel he will look to leave having finally won the Champions League for the blue half of the city.
