Man City's trump card showing no signs of slowing down

At one point on Saturday it looked like Manchester City would exit the FA Youth Cup to North London opposition for the second year running.

City have done well to put the heartbreaking defeat at Arsenal in the 120th minute of last season's semi-final behind them after playing the majority of the contest with 10 men. This term Spurs visited the Joie Stadium in the quarter-finals.

Trailing 1-0 in the closing stages, City were staring at another frustrating exit, but Luca Fletcher equalised on 83 minutes and Jacob Wright's brilliant free kick from 20 yards in the 89th minute sent the young Blues into the semi-final.

“At one stage it looked like it was running away from us but once we got the equaliser, I felt we could go on and win it,” head coach Ben Wilkinson told CityTV. “In winning at West Ham away and today we have shown real good character and good togetherness and you can see that by the way all the boys celebrated at the end.

"The players will take a lot from it and it’s an experience we can fall back on in the future. We were in the semi-finals last year and really disappointed not to get into the final."

City host Bristol City or Swindon in the semi-finals and will have home advantage in the final if they got there. Leeds face Liverpool in their quarter-final with Millwall waiting in the other semi-final having knocked out Chelsea.
