Man City's Etihad Stadium to host Euro 2028 matches after successful UK and Republic of Ireland bid

Manchester City's Etihad Stadium will host matches during the 2028 European Championship after confirmation that the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland will host the tournament.

The bid was confirmed as being successful during a UEFA meeting in Switzerland on Tuesday. It was running unopposed after Turkey, the only other bidders, withdrew from the process last week.

Part of the bidding process saw the hosts set out plans for the 10 stadiums that would host matches. And the Etihad was put forward as one of six grounds in England.

Wembley has also been put forward alongside St James' Park, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Villa Park and Everton's new Bramley-Moore Dock site.

Speaking upon confirmation of the proposed grounds, Danny Wilson, the managing director of Manchester City Operations, said of the Etihad's inclusion: We are delighted to be part of the UK and Ireland’s exciting proposal to host UEFA EURO 2028.

"Should the bid be successful, it will be a fantastic event for the city of Manchester with thousands of local and international fans attending the Etihad Stadium to enjoy one of Europe’s biggest sporting events.”

Elsewhere within the proposal, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will have one stadium each. Hampden Park in Glasgow, Cardiff's Principality Stadium, Dublin's Aviva Stadium and Casement Park in Belfast have been put forward.
