Man City can send Arsenal and Premier League rivals a timely reminder amid transfer frustration

Manchester City lock horns with Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday as Pep Guardiola's men go in search of some early 2023/24 silverware.

It's a glorious opportunity, under the Wembley arch, for City to have the perfect dress rehearsal to the opening day clash at Burnley next Friday. City's pre-season took them to Japan and South Korea, with the Blues subject to playing in intense heat against Yokohama, Bayern Munich and Athletic Madrid.

All the work has been to gear City up for the beginning of the Premier League, with more glory under Guardiola the motivation after a remarkable treble-winning campaign. Sunday's clash with the Gunners - given the strides taken by Mikel Arteta's men last season - is the ideal fixture to whet the appetite for City, Arsenal and Premier League fans.

The north London club have been busy this summer, with three billboard signings made in the form of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber. Midfielder Granit Xhaka has departed but Arteta has made three additions which undoubtedly strengthen his first-choice XI.

By contrast, City's summer has been relatively slow. Mateo Kovacic, for a savvy £25million, is the sole arrival while stalwarts Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez have moved on to pastures new. Meanwhile, a fee is agreed for Josko Gvardiol and his signature will be a significant piece of business for City.
