Man charged with murder of much-loved dad from Greater Manchester

A murder investigation is underway following the death of a man from Greater Manchester in Leeds.

Ian Aspinall died in hospital yesterday (Thursday) after an alleged attack on Sandford Road in Leeds. He was taken to hospital from the scene in a critical condition but sadly died of his injuries.

A murder probe was launched by detectives. Andrew Weston, 44, of Sandford Road, Leeds, has been charged with his murder.

He was remanded into custody ahead of an appearance at Leeds Magistrates' Court today. Ian was originally from Standish in Wigan, his family said.

The 50-year-old was a pupil at Standish High School and was popular in the local area. He had moved to Leeds to be closer to his son.

His family described him as a much-loved 'son, brother, uncle, father and friend to many who will be missed dearly'. A fundraiser has been set up to help pay for his funeral.

Anything extra that is donated will be used to help towards his son's upbringing. You can donate to the Go Fund Me page here.

Yesterday, Detective Inspector Jodie Hayes, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "We have been conducting extensive enquiries into this assault and, following Mr Aspinall’s death, have now launched a murder inquiry. Tragically, a man has lost his life and we are determined to get answers for his family and friends about the circumstances that have led to his death.

"Officers have spoken to a number of people in the area, but if there is anyone else who has any information that could help this ongoing investigation then I would ask that they contact us."
