Manchester United tracking MLS star amid goalkeeper transfer hunt

Manchester United are monitoring young goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

The Serbia international has impressed in the MLS for New England Revolution and his performances have caught the eye of European clubs. Premier League sides are keen on the 23-year-old and the Manchester Evening News understands United are interested but have not yet made contact.

The youngster has a contract until 2025 with a one-year option and his club would seek a decent fee for a player they only signed in April last year. Petrovic came through the ranks at FK Cukaricki in his homeland and featured for the club in the Europa Conference League.

He joined New England as a replacement for Arsenal-bound Matt Turner - who joined the Gunners for £5.75m - and has subsequently impressed, earning a reputation as one of the best keepers in the MLS.

Petrovic has two caps for his country and this month became eligible for a work permit under the points system, an advantage for English clubs in dealing with recruitment rules. He is understood to be happy and settled in the States but open to taking an opportunity at a top club if the project and pathway are right.

The Reds are on the hunt for a new number-one goalkeeper, with David De Gea’s contract up and any prospect of a renewal growing slim. Petrovic would not be considered a first-choice arrival at Old Trafford but could add competition with Dean Henderson wanted by Nottingham Forest amid a potential summer departure while Tom Heaton could also move on in search of more regular football. Jack Butland left United at the end of his loan spell from Crystal Palace and has subsequently joined Rangers.
