Malcolm Ebiowei explains snubbing Manchester United but names Cristiano Ronaldo as idol

Malcolm Ebiowei has revealed why he turned down the chance to join Manchester United in favour of a move to Crystal Palace.

United were keen on signing the 18-year-old, who enjoyed a breakthrough season with Derby County in the Championship last season. Ebiowei made 16 appearances for the Rams under Wayne Rooney, bringing him to the attention of some of the Premier League’s big-hitters.

Despite United’s interest, Ebiowei chose to join Palace instead, with the Eagles signing the winger on a five-year deal. In his first interview with the club since his deal became official, the teenager revealed why he chose Selhurst Park over other offers.

“I’m delighted, I’m over the moon,” Ebiowei told Palace TV. “I’m south London born and bred, so it’s a plus for me.

“I have seen a lot of players step up from the Championship to the Premier League and get their chance playing, and I was thinking that I would like to take that chance as well.

“I’m very excited – a bit nervous but that’s a part of it really. Excited.”

Having turned down United’s approaches, Ebiowei misses out on the chance to potentially play alongside his footballing hero. But the 18-year-old still believes he can learn a thing or two from the United great.

“[My hero] has always been Ronaldo,” Ebiowei added. “Obviously there is Neymar and Messi, Ronaldinho, but it’s always been Ronaldo – he’s the one that stands for me.

“I like to take players on. I’m creative, fearless. I like to win – I really like to win. If you see me getting emotional, it means I like to win – I’m not sulking!

“I’d like to learn off [Wilfried] Zaha for example, because he’s been doing it at the highest
