Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan proud of his team’s performance in 1-1 National League South draw against Folkestone Invicta

Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan got the performance he was looking for against Folkestone.

Fagan was proud of his side after their 1-1 Kent derby draw at the Gallagher Stadium on Tuesday night.

They created a host of good chances, twice striking the woodwork in the first half, only to trail to an Adam Lovatt goal 10 minutes after the break.

But Ken Charles levelled inside three minutes with his second goal of the season and United had further opportunities to beat a Folkestone side who also showed their quality and commitment to attack in a terrific derby.

It was just what Fagan wanted after they lost 2-1 to Farnborough in their opening home game as Maidstone supporters in a big crowd of more than 2,800 saw what his new-look team are about.

“I said before the game, it’s a Kent derby, we need to play with enthusiasm, considering the last home performance, and what a game,” said Fagan.

“I think the lads showed it. They were brave in possession but they competed. It was an exciting game. We had chances, a hell of a lot of chances in the first half.

“We’re disappointed to go a goal down but then you see the resilience to get back in the game and then we had a few more chances, maybe a penalty towards the end. I’m not too sure if it was or not.

“I just said in the changing room that’s the kind of performance that I want and demand.

“They gave me that and even before the game, we were speaking to the boys about what it means to play for this football club, what it means to play in Kent derbies, and they showed it.”

Fagan added: “Folkestone have got an attacking threat, without a doubt.
