Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan’s assessment of their 2-1 National League South victory over Salisbury | Hampton & Richmond next up on Bank Holiday Monday

Craig Fagan told Maidstone players it was the sign of a good team to win without playing well after their injury-time victory over Salisbury on Saturday.

United came from a goal down to beat the visitors 2-1 thanks to Riley Court’s first-half equaliser and a 93rd-minute winner from Ryan Hanson.

Salisbury, who led through Jordan Alonge, had Jaiden Bartolo sent off early in the second half and were reduced to nine when Yacou Traore received a second booking shortly after Hanson’s winner.

United, whose win sent them fourth in National League South after five games, weren’t at their best, but manager Fagan also praised Salisbury for making life difficult.

“It was frustrating, the way we played in the first half, but I’m not one that stands here and lies,” said Fagan.

“Credit to Salisbury. I thought their set-up was good. We didn’t move the ball quick enough. We didn’t play around them quick enough.

“But they were organised, they wanted it a little bit more than us in terms of their intensity of closing down and if the ball was going over their head they were recovering quicker than us and landing on seconds better, and that’s something we pride ourselves on.

“I’ve said before, we’re not an ultra-football team, we’re competitive, we can land on second balls, play forward, run forward and we didn’t do that enough in the first half.

“Luckily we managed to nick a goal but it was a frustrating first half. I let the players know about it, but they already knew what I was going to say.

“The sending-off after half-time obviously helps and I was happy to get the win at the end.

“I said in the changing room, the sign of a good team is being able to win when you don’t play so well.
