M66 reopens as police launch investigation following major crash which left three children hurt

The M66 motorway has fully opened this morning following a horror crash which left three children and one adult injured.

Police have launched an investigation following the multi-vehicle smash between junction 3 for Pilsworth and junction 4 for the M60 on Saturday afternoon (13 May).

A huge emergency service response was prompted, which saw two air ambulances land on the opposite carriageway. Fire crews and multiple paramedics and police officers also descended on the scene.

Greater Manchester Fire Service said they were working to help three children and an adult, who had been injured in the crash.

No further details about the nature of their condition have been released at this stage. GMP have been approached for more information on the incident.

Both sides of the M66 were closed for several hours on Saturday afternoon. The northbound carriageway reopened at around 8pm, but the southbound section remain shut for police investigation work to be carried out.

GMP are now reportedly appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, just after 3pm, to contact them with information.

In a statement this morning, National Highways said: "Cleared M66 southbound between J3 (Pilsworth) and the M60. Road now open after a serious collision yesterday and investigation work.

"GMP are appealing for witnesses for this collision that occurred at 3pm to call them on 01618564741 - incident 2254 of 13/05/23."

In a statement issued on Saturday afternoon, GMFRS said: "A serious road traffic collision involving four vehicles has completely closed the M66 in both directions between junctions 3 and 4.
